God's Maintenance Agreement

There used to be a commercial for Fram/Autolite which stated “you can either pay me now or you can pay me later.” The reference was to changing your oil and filter in your vehicle every three thousand miles, and changing your spark plugs as needed before they fouled out and your vehicle ran inefficiently. If careful attention is paid to the upkeep of your vehicle it could keep you from ending up with a break down. The ad could come across as arrogance or as being a bit intimidating, but it was not intended to be anything but just good maintenance for keeping your vehicle running in tip top shape.

The oil and filter changes kept dirt particles and engine wear shavings from building up in your engine. Removing these things kept your car running cooler and helped your engine last longer. It also helped with the performance of your vehicle. You depend on your vehicle to work for you on a daily basis so you have to keep it maintained.

Bringing this into a spiritual perspective is not too hard to do. God has a maintenance agreement with His children. His word always provides good treatments for keeping our lives in good running order. I Tim.4:16 “ Take heed unto thyself and unto the doctrine; continue in them; for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee.”

Timothy had to take care of his own spiritual welfare first, and then see to the spiritual welfare of his flock. Bible doctrine is the truth that keeps the grit and wear of life from overtaking us. Ps.119:9 “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.”

You have heard this pastor as well as other Christian leaders say on numerous occasions that truth is both corrective as well as preventive. Sometimes truth corrects us and sets us back on the right path. The Bible says he that receives reproof [correction] is wise. But the Bible is also preventive. It keeps us mindful of our places in the body of Christ. It keeps us humble and fruitful for the Lord. There never was, and there never will be a time when the word of God is harmful to God’s children.

The Bible says a father looks out for his children. He instructs them to go the right way. This is never bad. So much of the trouble we get ourselves into is because of poor decisions we make from a position of spiritual weakness.

Learning the Bible is more than getting information. It is more than poetry and history. It is more than prophecy. It is life changing when we take its message to heart. Ps.119:11 “Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against thee.”

James 1:21 “Wherefore, put away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” The engrafted word is that word of the Lord which goes down deep into the inner most recesses of our soul. It is God’s lubricating spiritual oil that lifts out the grit that causes so much of the friction in our lives. This friction which comes from the entanglements of the world and sin which lodges deep within us is the friction that wears us out. By having God’s fresh spiritual oil poured into our lives not only are harmful life threatening particles removed, but life rolls along a lot smoother. God’s maintenance agreement calls for all of us to stay in His word, so His word can build us up in the faith while at the same time displacing the harmful effects of the world that rob us of spiritual strength and lasting joy. It cost us time and effort to get to church to study. It cost us time and effort to study our Bible’s daily, but it is well worth it. We can either spend this time wisely now, or we can wait until we break down and learn our lessons the hard way. Let’s all be wise in this decision.
